How KDP works out your Kindle eBook royalty

A KDP royalty calculator does one sum, but the rules behind it change with your price. Kindle eBooks earn on one of two plans. The 70% plan works when your list price on Amazon.com is between $2.99 and $12.99. Amazon raised the top of that band from $9.99 to $12.99 in July 2026, so more books can now earn 70%. On this plan you also pay a delivery fee of $0.15 for each megabyte of your file. A 2 MB novel at $4.99 earns 70% of $4.99, which is $3.49, minus $0.30 delivery. That leaves you $3.19 a sale.

The 35% plan has no delivery fee and works at almost any price, up to $200. The lowest price you can set depends on your file size:

  • Under 3 MB: at least $0.99
  • 3 MB to under 10 MB: at least $1.99
  • 10 MB or more: at least $2.99

If you pick 70% but price outside the band, KDP pays 35% instead. The calculator flags this for you.

How paperback royalties work on Amazon KDP

Paperbacks earn a share of the list price, minus what it costs Amazon to print your copy. On Amazon.com the share is 60% when your price is $9.99 or more, and 50% when it's $9.98 or less. That one cent matters. A 300-page, 6 × 9 inch paperback in black ink costs $4.60 to print. At $9.98 you earn $0.39 a copy. At $9.99 you earn $1.39.

What KDP charges to print a paperback

Print cost is a fixed fee plus a cost per page. Large trims, wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches, cost more. Here are the Amazon.com rates.

InkRegular trimLarge trim
Black, 24 to 110 pages$2.30$2.84
Black, over 110 pages$1.00 + $0.012/page$1.00 + $0.017/page
Standard color, 72 to 600 pages$1.00 + $0.0255/page$1.00 + $0.0402/page
Premium color, 24 to 40 pages$3.60$4.20
Premium color, 42 to 828 pages$1.00 + $0.065/page$1.00 + $0.08/page

The lowest list price KDP lets you set

KDP won't let your royalty fall below zero, so your price has to cover printing. The minimum is your print cost divided by your royalty rate. Because the rate jumps at $9.99, the answer can surprise you. A book that costs $5.50 to print would need $11.00 at 50%. But at $9.99 the 60% rate kicks in, and 60% of $9.99 covers the $5.50. So $9.99 is the real minimum. The calculator works this out and warns you if your price is too low.

Is KDP expanded distribution worth it?

Expanded distribution offers your paperback to bookstores, libraries and other online shops. Those sales pay 40% of the list price, minus printing. On the same $14.99, 300-page book, that's $1.40 a copy, against $4.39 on Amazon. You need a price of at least your print cost divided by 0.4 to use it. It rarely makes much money for indie authors, but it can help if you want libraries or local shops to be able to order your book.

How to earn more from each sale

  • Keep your eBook price between $2.99 and $12.99 so you stay on 70%.
  • Shrink big images in your eBook. Every megabyte costs you $0.15 a sale on 70%.
  • Price paperbacks at $9.99 or more, not $9.98. The extra cent lifts your share to 60%.
  • Check your trim. A 6 × 9 book prints cheaper per page than a 7 × 10 one.
  • Sell some copies direct. Selling from your own site skips Amazon's share, and your site can still link readers to every store.

If you don't have a home for your books yet, AuthorPage builds you an author website with buy links for every store. It's free at authorpage.me/yourname, or on your own domain with Pro. Rates on this page come from KDP's royalty help pages.
