How many pages is 80,000 words?

An 80,000-word novel comes to about 268 pages at 5.5 × 8.5 inches, or about 230 pages at 6 × 9. That's with 11 pt type and normal book spacing. The same book is 320 pages as a double-spaced manuscript, which is why your draft looks longer than the finished book. Use this word count to pages table for other lengths. It assumes a novel at 11 pt, single spaced.

How we turn words into pages

We start from a typical number of words on a printed page for each trim size. These come from real novels set in 11 pt type, so treat them as estimates. Then we adjust for your choices. Smaller type fits more words on each line and more lines on each page, so 10 pt holds about a fifth more than 11 pt. Wider line spacing means fewer lines, so 1.5 spacing holds about a third less than single.

  • 5 × 8 in: about 250 words a page
  • 5.25 × 8 in: about 265 words a page
  • 5.5 × 8.5 in: about 300 words a page
  • 6 × 9 in: about 350 words a page
  • 7 × 10 in: about 450 words a page
  • 8.5 × 11 in: about 600 words a page

The kind of book matters too. Nonfiction with photos or charts has far fewer words per page. Poetry has short lines and lots of white space. Picture books are mostly pictures, so we use about 30 words a page. Your range covers 10% either side, because chapter openers, dialogue and scene breaks all move the count.

Common book lengths by genre

Readers and agents expect certain lengths in each genre. These are typical ranges, not rules. Plenty of good books sit outside them.

Manuscript pages vs printed pages

A standard manuscript uses 12 pt type, double spacing and one-inch margins. That fits about 250 words a page. Agents and editors count pages this way, but it has nothing to do with your printed book. A printed page is smaller and set tighter, so it holds more words. If someone asks how long your book is, give the word count. It means the same thing to everyone.

Why your page count matters for KDP

On Amazon KDP, page count sets two things you care about. Print cost goes up with every page, which changes your royalty. You can check that with our KDP royalty calculator. Page count also sets your spine width, which your cover designer needs. KDP uses 0.002252 inches a page for white paper and 0.0025 for cream. The cover size calculator turns that into a full cover size with bleed.

Once your book is out, readers need somewhere to find it. An AuthorPage author website puts all your books, buy links and newsletter sign-up in one place, free at authorpage.me/yourname.
